SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – The San Diego personal injury attorneys at our firm have received word that an 18-year-old boy was seriously injured Monday when his father lost control of a power boat on Mission Bay. The father and son were driving in separate boats at very high speeds around 2:40 p.m. The two were racing at the time of the accident. The father lost control of his 25-foot power boat and crashed into his son’s 18-foot boat. The son was trapped on board as a result of the accident.
Lifeguard Lieutenant Andy Lerum said the smaller boat driven by the son continued speeding out of control after it was struck. It eventually crashed onto Ski Beach. The son was alone at the time of the accident. He was pulled from the wreckage by lifeguards and medics a short time later. He was unconscious and bleeding at the time. The father had two others on board his boat during the accident. They were unharmed. Officers of the San Diego Police harbor unit are investigating the accident. Lerum said that the speed law on Mission Bay requires boaters to slow down within 100 feet of another vessel. Lerum said the vehicles were not obeying the law and excessive speed was a factor in the accident.
