LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – A 69-year-old man was supposed to be arraigned yesterday on charges that he killed a 3-year-old girl with his SUV outside an elementary school in the Diamond Bar area last year. Conrado Pantig Maglonzo was charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death of Michelle Kwon. The accident occurred November 26, 2008.
At the time of the accident, Maglonzo was speeding when he veered onto the sidewalk outside of Maple Hill Elementary School. That is when he struck Kwon, who was walking with her father and sister at the time. According to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, prosecutors recommended setting bail at $25,000 in the case. Maglonzo appeared in court and his arraignment was postponed until December 18 for undisclosed reasons.
After someone is killed in a tragic accident such as this, the legal process can take a great deal of time. There are often criminal charges filed against the responsible party, as here. Though criminal charges may help a family to move on emotionally, they do not help a family to recover economic damages associated with the loss of the loved one.
