ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA – Two teenagers were injured while riding their bicycles on Wednesday. The boys, ages 13 and 14, were riding west on Bear Valley Parkway east of Royal Crest Drive around 8:20 a.m. when they were in an accident with a tan colored SUV. The SUV had veered into the bike lane, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newbury.
The first of the boys applied his bicycle brakes and steered to the right to avoid the SUV. He instead hit the curb and was thrown from his bicycle. The second rider also tried to stop but was unable to do so before hitting his friend and being thrown from his bike. The driver briefly stopped and rolled down the passenger side window of the SUV. She asked if the boys were alright. One of the teens yelled that his friend was bleeding.
The driver, who was described as Latina, petite, with shoulder length hair, acne scars, and a Spanish accident, then left the scene of the accident. Both boys were taken to the hospital for treatment of multiple abrasions. The 13-year-old boy may have had a broken nose. The 14-year-old had cuts on his right leg, as well as on his shoulder. The CHP is looking for the driver and anyone with information is asked to call.
