SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA- Four people were injured while riding on a San Francisco Municipal Railway cable car on November 21. The four were injured when the cable car stopped suddenly without warning and the passengers fell around 1 p.m. The cable car’s conductor, gripman, and two other passengers were injured when the cable car suddenly stopped on the Powell Street line.
A strand had started to detach from the underground cable. The cable is used to propel the cars up and down the San Francisco hills. The cable cars only travel at a reported speed of around 10 miles per hour. According to initial reports, the cable car’s operator was unable to release the grip from the partially torn cable. The operator subsequently contacted central control to shut down the system automatically. The cable car was headed to Fisherman’s Wharf when the incident occurred. No other cable cars were involved. The accident is currently under a more thorough investigation.
