NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA – A cyclist was critically injured while riding along a busy Newport Beach thoroughfare on Wednesday. Authorities announced Friday that the man tragically died of his injuries on Friday. Donald Murphy, a 49-year-old Irvine resident, died at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana Thursday. Murphy had been riding in a bike lane on Jamboree Road near Ford Road on Wednesday. While he was riding, Patricia Ann Izquieta, a resident of Riverside, made an unsafe turn and struck him.
Izquieta left the scene but was arrested a short time later on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. Newport Beach police Sergeant Evan Sailor said that the District Attorney’s Office will be working with investigators to determine whether any additional charges, such as manslaughter, may be filed. Murphy was taken directly to the hospital from the scene. Unfortunately, he was not able to be saved and he later succumbed to his injuries. Izquieta has posted bond and been released from county jail in Santa Ana.
