Twelve People Seriously Injured in Ventura County Accident

VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – Twelve people were transported to area hospitals after an accident Saturday night on Highway 126 near Santa Paula. The accident occurred at around 6:30 p.m. east of Toland Road. 26-year-old Alex Rojas lost control of his SUV while attempting to pass the vehicle in front of him. According to the California Highway Patrol, he had moved into another lane at an unsafe speed. The roadway was wet from rain and Rojas was unable to maintain control of his vehicle. He drifted back into his original lane and hit the vehicle he had just passed.

The initial impact sent Rojas’ vehicle across the center median and into the eastbound lane were it was broadsided by a truck. The truck was drivn by 29-year-old Maria Troncoso. She attempted to brake to avoid the collision but was unable to stop in time. Rojas’ passenger, 22-year-old Diana Gutierrez was ejected from the vehicle at the time of the second impact, she was not wearing a seatbelt.  Gutierrez suffered major injuries, including a lacerated spleen and a collapsed lung. Troncoso also suffered major injuries including chest pain and a broken leg. Troncoso’s nine-year-old passenger, Angel Troncoso, sustained internal injuries and a facial fracture. The two-year-old boy in Rojas’ vehicle, Jaden Rojas, also sustained a facial fracture and a broken leg.

Both of the seriously injured child passengers were taken to hospitals in Ventura. They were both subsequently transferred to major medical centers in Los Angeles. Angel was transferred from Community Memorial Hospital to UCLA and Jaden was taken from Ventura County Medical Center to Children’s Hospital. No updated information on their conditions was available. Maria Troncoso was treated at Community Memorial and released. Gutierrez was listed in stable condition at Ventura County Medical Center as of Sunday evening.
