SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – An American Airlines MD-80 returned to Lindbergh Field for an emergency landing on Wednesday shortly after takeoff. An airline spokesman said the plane made the landing due to an engine malfunction. Flight 1754 from San Diego to Dallas-Fort Worth left Lindbergh Field just before 10 a.m. and was back on the ground in San Diego about 15 to 20 minutes later.

The pilots of the plane reported a problem with the right engine shortly after takeoff. The engine was not making full power. Airline spokesman Tim Smith said the engine problem could have been related to an air-fuel mixture issue. The plane, with 106 passengers, landed safely and passengers were rerouted on other flights. Smith said the plane can fly with one engine and was not in true danger at any time. Smith also said that, because this incident was rare, though not unprecedented, the aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection and servicing.
