TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA- Police ticketed 41 drivers for talking on their cell phones while driving in Torrance in the span of one hour last week. Officers from the Torrance Police Department’s traffic and special events division set up an operation on Hawthorne Boulevard at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Their purpose was to stop drivers for texting or talking while driving their cars. The operation lasted only one hour and 41 violators were caught.
The operation was prompted by police officers’ observations while on the road, according to Sergeant Jeremiah Hart. Hart said they were seeing a lot of drivers on their phones and they hoped to educate drivers that the law against that behavior will be enforced. During the operation, one driver was also arrested for driving without a license. The total fine for a first cell phone violation is $142, including court fees and penalty assessments.
It is important that drivers obey all of the rules of the road. The cell phone laws in California are meant to reduce driver distraction and thus reduce injury accidents. If you have been injured in an accident caused by an inattentive driver, you may have a personal injury claim against the responsible driver.
