EAST COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – Two motorists were trapped in their cars and had to be extricated Sunday night after a head-on collision. The accident was reported around 9 p.m. on I-8, west of state Route 79, east of Alpine. A 66-year-old woman was driving westbound on I-8, traveling about 75 miles per hour in a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina. For unknown reasons, she drove off the south side of the road and through a dirt and grass divide. She then continued onto the eastbound lanes of the I-8 where her vehicle hit two other cars.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings, the woman was trapped in her vehicle until emergency crews could extricate her. She was taken by helicopter to the hospital with internal injuries and a broken ankle. A 27-year-old driver also had to be extricated from his vehicle, a 2007 Honda Accord. He had been hit head-on by the Lumina. After he was removed from his vehicle, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance with complaints of pain. The 34-year-old driver of the other car struck by the Lumina was uninjured. All eastbound traffic was shut down at Willows Road after the 9 p.m. crash for approximately an hour.
