Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run Death

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Police arrested a man Saturday in the hit and run death of a woman who was killed early Friday. The woman was standing next to her parked car in Chollas View outside the catering truck company where she worked when she was killed. The woman was identified by the medical examiner’s office as Alejandra Vazquez of San Diego. She was 35.

Police said someone at a junkyard in Otay Mesa reported an unusual vehicle at the business on Saturday morning. The vehicle looked like it had been in an accident and the plates were missing, according to San Diego Police Office David Stafford. Investigators used the vehicle identification number to find the registered owner. He was identified as 51-year-old Bruce Hanson of San Diego.

According to the County Jail website, Hanson was booked on charges of hit-and-run causing death and gross vehicular manslaughter. Bail was set at $50,000 for the first charge and $100,000 on the second. Hanson is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Vazquez, the victim in the accident, worked as the driver of a Moody’s Lunch Service catering truck. She was hit by a station wagon on Market Street near 47th Street just after 2 a.m. Friday. She had just arrived for work with her mother, who was a cook for the same catering truck. The medical examiner said Vazquez was hit by a sedan traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. She was thrown across vehicles that were parked along Market Street. Co-workers said Vazquez was single and lived with her mother. She had worked off and on for the company for about 10 years.

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. Fortunately, the police caught the driver who killed this woman. This man may be held criminally as long as civilly liable for Vazquez’s death.
