LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -  A fatal collision and a large pothole closed freeways and caused major delays near Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol. Southbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Olympic Boulevard were closed for several hours after a four car accident reported just before 6 a.m. A man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. There were no other initial reports of injuries. According to CHP Officer Krystal Carter, the cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

The first crash may have caused a second accident. The second accident involved an off-duty sheriff’s deputy. The CHP had opened the far right lane of the 110 Freeway and the transition road to the Santa Monica Freeway at 7:20 a.m. All southbound lanes were open by 8:45 a.m.

Later, on the Santa Ana Freeway, southbound lanes just north of East 1st Street were closed after a large pothole was reported. The pothole measured 4 feet in diameter and was about six inches deep. 20 to 25 vehicles were stranded on the right shoulder with flat tires. Caltrans is working to repair the pothole but there is no estimate of when the freeway would reopen.
