CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA – An 18-year-old Carlsbad man died Friday night after he was hit by two cars while crossing Palomar Airport Road. A woman who called police on Saturday said she may have been involved in the accident, according to police. The victim has officially been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Steven Anthony Kelley.
According to authorities, Kelley was crossing the northbound lanes of El Camino Real south of Camino Vida Roble around 9:45 p.m. Friday when he was struck by two vehicles. The driver of the first vehicle did not stop after hitting the victim. The driver of the second vehicle was stopped by a Carlsbad police officer who saw the victim on the road. The driver did not realize that a pedestrian had been struck.
Carlsbad Fire Department paramedics were going to take Kelley to Palomar Airport so he could be transferred by medical helicopter to a trauma center. However, despite their aggressive lifesaving efforts, Kelley died in the ambulance on the way to the airport around 10:15 p.m.
On Saturday, a woman called the Carlsbad police station and told them she had struck an object while driving on El Camino Real on Friday night according to Lieutenant Jay Eppel. The woman and her husband later returned to the spot but were unable to find anything and returned home. After the call, the woman’s car was seized to look for evidence. The District Attorney’s Office will review the case and decide whether to file any criminal charges.
