SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Six people were injured on the southbound Interstate 805 just north of Market Street early Thursday morning in a multi-car accident. Investigators say that at least one of the drivers involved in the accident may have been intoxicated at the time.
The chain reaction accident first started around 2 a.m. when a vehicle pulled over with a flat tire and was struck by another vehicle, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. Several other impacts followed and blocked all but the number 3 lane of the highway.
Two motorists were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by rescue teams. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque said that six people were transported to area hospitals following the accident. Five of those people suffered major trauma. A traffic alert was issued and cars were diverted off the freeway at Home Avenue. At least two of the vehicles involved in the accident fled the scene. Four tow trucks responded to clear the other vehicles that were involved. The lanes were clear and re-open by 4 a.m.
