ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA – A 24-year-old man driving under the influence of marijuana caused at least 13 collisions Thursday afternoon. The man from Temecula was driving a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder just before 3 p.m. Thursday north on Bear Valley Parkway near Royal Crest Drive. According to Escondido Police Sergeant Don Shumate, at least seven accidents were reported in that area and the man did not stop at any of them.
He instead made a U Turn and started driving south. He spent most of his time on the wrong side of the road. Many drivers had to swerve to avoid hitting him. The man caused sex more accidents before he had a head on crash with a vehicle on Via Rancho Parkway near the Interstate 15. The head on collision disabled his vehicle. At one point prior to that, he had passed in front of San Pasqual High School near the time school was letting out for the day.
Two people from the accidents were taken to the hospital for treatment. They were expected to survive. When confronted by officers, the man said he had recently smoked marijuana. He showed them his medical marijuana card to justify the behavior. The man then hit a police officer in the face while resisting arrest. He left a total of 13 reported accidents in a one mile stretch before he was arrested. Police believe he may have crashed into more vehicles because of debris found in the road. However, only 13 accidents were reported. The man was booked into County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, battery on a peace officer and driving under the influence of marijuana.
Driving is the most dangerous activity that most people will do in their daily lives. It is vitally important that all drivers take the proper precautions when driving and do not drive under the influence of any controlled substances.
