SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – Three people were injured in a chain-reaction multi-car pileup Wednesday on the Interstate 5 offramp near Balboa Park. The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. The driver of a 2006 silver Volvo S40, was heading south on the I-5, taking the Pershing Drive offramp when he lost control of the car. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Athans, the car then hit a curb and tore open the oil pan underneath. Oil spilled all over the road.
Seven separate collisions subsequently occurred, involving more than a dozen vehicles. Seven tow trucks had to be called to the scene. The offramp was closed until just before 6 p.m. There were no lane closures on Interstate 5. Athans said he was unsure what role the oil played in the accidents, or if people were driving at an unsafe speed. The driver of the Volvo that initially lost control was a 30-year-old man. He was not cited at the scene.
