SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – San Diego lifeguards reported making about 20 water rescues Saturday when an estimated 3,000 people were gathered on and near Fiesta Island for a party. Nearly half of the people were floating on inner tubes, rafts, and similar items. According to Lieutenant John Everhart with the lifeguard service, many of the people were drinking alcohol at the time.
A 2008 city law prohibits people from having open containers of alcohol on the beach. However, it does not cover someone in the water on a floatation device. Saturday’s event in the Enchanted Cove area peaked in attendance around 3:30 p.m. It was winding down a few hours later. Lifeguards added extra staff members on Saturday after they read about the floating party on social networking websites. No major injuries were reported despite all the rescues.
Luckily no one was injured in this party in the water. Thankfully, it seems like most people were on simple floatation devices and were not operating boats. Just like on land, it is important that people take care when operating vehicles, such as boats, on the water.
