ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA – Counselors were sent to Escondido High School on Tuesday morning to assist students dealing with the death of a classmate Monday night. Students were told this morning that 18-year-old Michael Hoffman, a senior at Escondido High School, was killed when his car hit a wooden pole as he was turning at the intersection of Broadway and North Avenue.
He was driving north of Broadway just before 6 p.m. when he lost control of his Pontiac Firebird at the stop sign at North Avenue and slid into the pole. Investigators believe he was speeding. Paramedics provided first aid and took the teen to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at 6:15 pm. Students taped a placard to the telephone pole, which was just a short distance from the school. It said, “We love you Michael”.
Our hearts go out to the family of the young man killed in this tragic accident. This seems to have been a tragic mistake. It is important that all drivers, young and old alike, exercise caution when operating vehicles of any kind in order to keep the roads safe.
