LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – Three weeks after a man was killed by a dump truck, his friends and family are still wondering what exactly happened. 78-year-old Karl Weichinger used to walk the L.A. River path from his apartment four times a week. However, on June 1, he left for a walk and never came back. The coroner said Karl died of multiple traumatic injuries. He also ruled the death an accident, saying the dump truck was backing up and didn’t see Karl before crushing him.
However, relatives and friends are convinced the driver was being reckless and driving too fast when the accident occurred. Maywood-Cudahy Police Detective Scott Cameron said there were no witnesses so it will be almost impossible to determine the exact cause. The driver told police he did not see Karl. The investigation included an inspection of the truck. There was no evidence that the truck was ever traveling more than 5 miles per hour. For their part, Karl’s family is pleading with any potential undiscovered witnesses to come forward and contact police.
