SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – A suspected drunk driver was arrested in the College area Tuesday after he veered off the road and crashed into at least two buildings and several cars. The driver was hearing east on El Cajon Boulevard near 58th Street when he lost control of his Budget rental truck shortly after midnight. San Diego Police said he sideswiped at least one car before he hit a parked Mitsubishi Montero. He smashed its back window, flattened a tire and tore off the left taillight.
The truck careened onto the sidewalk and knocked over a tall palm tree before smashing into The Greek Corner restaurant. The collision broke a front window and ripped off part of the front wall as well as part of the roof. The truck then continued to travel and ran over more trees, a newspaper truck and a pay phone before colliding with a second business, Progress Management. There, it shattered two large plate glass windows and broke off parts of the wall and portions of the shingled roof. The truck finally came to rest after smashing through a metal fence. It stopped just before hitting a row of gas meters.
The driver of the truck ran after the accident but was caught and taken into police custody. His name has not yet been released. Thankfully, no one was injured. Investigators have not yet released a damage estimate.
